Product Details

This brooch is hand made in Scotland, UK out of Pewter. This trefoil brooch is decorated in the Borre style which was common in the mid 9th to mid 10th century. It is based on one found in the North of England. This type of brooch was typically used by women as a clothing fastener, perhaps to close a coat.

The Borre style takes its name from another set of bronze bridle-mounts from a ship burial at Borre in Vestfold, Norway. This style continues the use of the “gripping beast” motif, but with a new development – the ribbon shaped body is beneath a rather triangular head with protruding ears. This can be seen in this example of a silver-gilt pendant from a hoard found in Vrby in Sweden.
